We are saddened to learn that Emma Perez, mother of PSC president Rick Perez, passed away on Friday, November 8. Our condolences to Rick and his family.

Sue Stokes Memorial Trophy Recipient

Congratulations to PSC member Karen Pieper!

"The Bay Area Ice Dancers have awarded the first Susan Haruta Stokes Memorial Trophy to a BAID ice dancer, Karen Pieper.

Karen has battled multiple hardships with great spirit and determination. Through it all she has pursued her love of ice skating, competed in ice dancing, and has been an inspiration to the rest of us ice dancers.

The loss of Susan Stokes was a loss to the ice skating community and especially to BAID. Susan was a founder of BAID some thirty-one years ago and had been a consistent participant and supporter."

Karen Chen wins gold at JGP Slovakia!

Polina Edmunds wins gold at JGP Mexico!

Polina Edmunds won gold in her Junior Grand Prix debut in Mexico! Congratulations!

Congratulations to PSC skaters at JGP Latvia

Karen Chen won her first Junior Grand Prix medal at JGP Latvia - Bronze. Lorraine McNamara and her partner took Silver in dance, and Elliana Pogrebinsky and her partner took 4th. Congratulations to all!

Judging Honor

Congrats to Joan Burns who was honored for 50 years of judging within USFSA and Internationally. Joan has had a long history (1960)- with the club has been President, test chair,club session chair, was instrumental in the merger of 3 clubs into one-(Silver Edge, CrystalSprings and El Camino) into Peninsula SC. Was a board member of the USFSA and Membership chairman of USFSA. Thanks Joan for all your contribution to PSC and USFSA!

Athlete Ambassador Award

Congratulations to Amy Lin the reigning U.S. novice silver medalist, who received this award from US Figure Skating. Amy is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and was awarded High Honor Roll from California Capistrano Connections Academy for the 2012-13 year. She volunteers with Hoop Shots, a weekly program for children with special needs, plants trees through the Nature Interpretive Center, has participated in the Annual Ice Dance Weekend exhibition for Bay Area ice dancers since 2008 and performed in both the 2012 Broadway benefit show for the Riverside Icetown Rink and 2013 California Gold SkateFest fundraising exhibition. Congrats!

Disbrow Award

Congrats to Rick Perez, PSC President, who was presented with the Jimmy Disbrow Award during the National Championships. The annual award honors a member of the skating community who shares Disbrow's passion for life and for skating. Disbrow was a past president of U.S. Figure Skating and also served as an Olympic team leader, chair of the 1998 World Figure Skating Championships and an international judge.

Rick definitely reflects the criteria for the award:
-Zest for life and brings smiles to the faces of people around him
-Selfless and enthusiastic benevolence on behalf of skating and is an inspiration to others
-Vision for skating which both encourages innovation and unites the skating community

In addition to his presidency of our club, Rick is an international judge and recently was the chief referee of the US National Championship in Omaha.

Competition Results

Congrats to Sarah Chen and Cindy Zihan Yang for their accomplishments at the recent Silver Spin Competition. They are the winners respectively of the Belmont Memorial Trophy (best overall Pre-Preliminary 3 skater) and the Silver Spin Trophy (most proficient spinner among the Novice to Senior level competitors). Junior World Team

Congratulations to PSC skater Lauri Bonacorsi who along with her partner Travis Mager placed seventh in Junior Dance at the World Junior Championships in Minsk, Belarus.

Attention High School Seniors!

Several years ago, U.S. Figure Skating launched its Graduating Seniors Program to recognize the achievements of those individuals graduating from high school who continued their training in figure skating while pursuing their academic studies. The purpose of this program is to honor and credit those qualified graduates for their achievements during high school through the presentation of a certificate to the skater during a school function or recognition opportunity. Recognition is proudly awarded on behalf of the U.S. Figure Skating Program Development Committee to those high school graduates who meet the necessary application criteria. The application and more information are available on the USFS website.

Sad News

We are very saddened to announce the death of Howard Taylor, 93, who passed away suddenly at his home in Walnut Creek on Feb 5, 2012.

Howard was involved with skating for much of his life. He was a Singles, Pairs & Dance Judge and National Referee. He previously served on several committees for U.S. Figure Skating and was also recognized as an honorary member of U.S. Figure Skating's Executive Committee.

A St. Moritz ISC member for more than 50 years, Howard was a dedicated volunteer who served on the club's Board of Directors, including as its President. Over his many decades in support of the sport of figure skating, he helped organize local skating competitions and shows, as well as National and International events held in the Bay Area. Howard was also one of the original organizers of the Central California Interclub Association. His motto was "keep 'em skating!" and he remained supportive of skaters and skating activities for all levels. Howard will be missed by his skating family.

Howard Taylor was the beloved husband of Georgia, father of Donna, Georgia, Diana and Debra and brother of Don. Private funeral services will be held.

Sad News

Joan Lucas passed away in December. Joan was involved with skating for much of her life as a competitor and an official. She was a member of St. Moritz for more than 50 years and served on the Board, including as President of the club. Joan was a competition and test Judge for singles, pairs and dance as well as a National Referee. We are currently not aware of any living relatives that Joan might have had, but are looking into it with the help of some of her friends. If anyone has any information you can share, please contact the webmaster. Until some issues can be sorted through, we are not sure of any plans for a memorial service or gathering, but we will keep you informed if and when any new information is available.

Joan was very dedicated to the sport of figure skating and she will be missed by her skating family.

Chen in the News

U.S. Figure Skating announced that Karen Chen has been awarded a grant from the Joyce Komperda Athlete Support Fund. The fund provides support to intermediate, novice and junior athletes who demonstrate financial need. Karen will receive a $5,000 grant to assist her with skating expenses for the 2012 calendar year. Chen Wins Award!

Karen Chen won the Betty Sonnhalter Memorial Award at the Rim of the World Open! The award is given to the most outstanding overall performance by a Juvenile through Senior level skater.

We are sorry to report that Art Gershman a thirty year judge and member of the Santa Rosa Figure Skating Club passed away on August 3rd.

Board of Directors

Effective July 11th, Randy Mai resigned his role as President of PSC. In his place Rick Perez has assumed the role. Betsy Anderson is now the Vice President.

McGlauflin goes International

Elizabeth McGlauflin placed fourth in Master Ladies II and third in Master and Gold Ladies II Artistic at the seventh International Adult Figure Skating Competition in Oberstdorf, Germany. Hosted by Deutsche Eislauf-Union and held at Eislaufzentrum Oberstdorf, the event featured 328 skaters representing 26 countries.
